What does Guro mean?
Guro is the Filipino word for “teacher”, a teacher of the Filipino martial arts.

How did you get into FMA and what is your experience in martial arts?
My father was a brown belt in Shotokan Karate, my parents then enrolled me and my brother into a local karate school. In 1997, I received a brown belt and competed in Tae Kwon Do tournaments. Fast forward to 2010 where I enlisted in the US Army and where I trained in Muay Thai and certified and competed in US Army Combative’s competitions. After completing my military service, I wanted to get into Filipino Martial Arts and came across Trampilla Arnis, founded by Punong Guro (a very patient instructor) in which he trained and certified me.

What is Trampilla Arnis?
Trampilla Arnis is a Filipino Martial Arts system developed by Punong Guro Paolo David, which teaches a unique approach of baiting and feinting to the art of Balintawak stick fighting.

What inspired you to start teaching?
I was always brought up to “respect” my elders and those in charge of educating the youth, having a family of my own, my wife and children are my diamonds, and I believe everyone is a diamond worth protecting and I feel a call to share this treasured art of the Filipinas.

What is Kolbe Kali?
Kolbe Kali is an instructional program that teaches FMA (Filipino Martial Arts also known as Kali/Escrima/Arnis), which emphasizes weapon-based fighting with sticks and various hand weapons, as well as “open hand” techniques (without weapons), using the Trampilla Arnis methodology.

What does it mean to protect your diamond?
Our footwork is based on a diamond, which is essentially two triangles attached to its bases, the practitioner is in the center of the diamond and he/or she depending on path of attack (aggressive or passive) will protect themselves. Everyone has a diamond in their life. In my eyes, everyone is a diamond, protect your diamond.

What do you want your students to take away from your training sessions?
Arnis/Eskrima/Kali is very effective but just a very special skill. The name Kolbe came from a priest named Maximilian Kolbe, who during the Nazi occupation of Poland offered his life in place of a man, who was a husband and father, because Maximillian saw the family as priceless diamonds. If there is anything I want my students to leave with, it is this, that they see their own life and everyone else’s as precious, that they use this skill to protect their diamond.
